A nation traumatized by Paris Hilton

Paris Hilton

I think it's safe to say that we as a nation have been traumatized, victimized, and fearful of being held captive by Paris Hilton for the rest of our lives.

Please, Paris darling, let us go. You are really 'hot' and everything...I mean apparenty to someone out there you are hot. Not to anyone I know personally. But quit manipulating us. Quit taking up our space...you space cadet.

Is it our fault or yours that we have such an obsession with you?

I think it's yours...so, you are This Week's Top Scrooge. Like, sorry, I hope you don't think that's not hot. You know how you first thought it was not cool to go to jail and now you think it's hot.

Now on satellite, radio jocks Opie and Anthony hit lower

This Week’s Top Scrooge - May 11, 2007

Freedom is a wonderful thing. Even the freedom to make mistakes can sometimes serve as an opportunity to learn. It’s something not to be taken for granted.

Apparently shock jocks Opie and Anthony took their freedom to make a live on-air mistake, and their company’s freedom to fire them, and pulled another bonehead move in their new jobs on satellite radio.

On Wednesday they “joked” about raping Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice — over the satellite aire waves.

Not funny. I used to think “shock jocks” was kind of a cute tag. No more. To me, shock jocks, will forever be code for radio characters “reaching for the lowest common denominator…and then going lower.”

This Week's Top Scrooge - May 4, 2007

There are some stories I just can’t shake. Even if they do fall back into the recesses of my brain, it takes some time.

While scanning the web for news on This Week’s Top Scrooge…it’s those stories, the ones which define evil in a way maybe not heard before or maybe just plain scary that I decide to feature. While some acts of scroogery we can have a little fun with, this one doesn’t fit in that category.

How big a part do drugs play in this story out of Toledo, Ohio? Probably a lot. The lead paragraph alone is frightening enough:

Baldwin mug2

By ALEXANDER
TheScroogeReport

In Hollywood it's all about image.

Is it any wonder that rude, thoughtless little pig Alec Baldwin is now on the Apology Tour 2007? Sure, he must be feeling bad...after all his daughter has insulted him over and over again for a long, long time. How can an 11 or 12 or whatever-year-old do that to him? Absolute torture.

The Baldwin Tape came in late last week, not in time to make last week's Top Scrooge, but hey, this week is as good as ever for dishonoring Alec.

This Week's Top Scrooge - April 20, 2007

We all surely must have recognized evil this week. And although I try every week to have fun with poking fun at the boneheads and blunders of this world, this week, the week a student slaughtered 32 of his fellow Virginia Tech Hokies, I don't see any point to it.

I will say the blame game seems to be endless, a bottomless pit of analyzation, dissection, and "what ifs". I pray the parents, relatives, and friends of all the victims including those of Seung-Hui Cho are not tormented or drown by a sea of questions.

This morning I woke up knowing that we need God more than ever...and that He can be leaned on as illustrated in Ephesians chapter 6, verses 11-18.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints...

As a little bit of background to Ephesians, the apostle Paul visited Ephesus for the purpose of exhortation and making sure they had good leadership but he was not the one that founded the church there. The church had its work cut out in Ephesus because of idolatry concerning Diana the goddess that was worshipped there. The book of Ephesians was a letter to the churches written by Paul.

The church in Ephesus, which was in an area now inside Turkey, needed help. Whether you look at the VT massacre as an isolated event or a flashpoint in U.S. history, many also need help with coping, moving on, and living a fruitful life.

Can we use these verses from Ephesians as a tool or weapon against evil today? I believe we can and the church I'm talking about now is not confined to Virginia Tech, or Virginia, or the U.S., but the church of the Lord, which is bigger than we can even begin to understand. All those that have given their hearts to Him are a part of that church.

And that church, I believe, needs to put on the full armor of God right now, today, tomorrow, and always.
