This Week's Top Scrooge - April 20, 2007

We all surely must have recognized evil this week. And although I try every week to have fun with poking fun at the boneheads and blunders of this world, this week, the week a student slaughtered 32 of his fellow Virginia Tech Hokies, I don't see any point to it.

I will say the blame game seems to be endless, a bottomless pit of analyzation, dissection, and "what ifs". I pray the parents, relatives, and friends of all the victims including those of Seung-Hui Cho are not tormented or drown by a sea of questions.

This morning I woke up knowing that we need God more than ever...and that He can be leaned on as illustrated in Ephesians chapter 6, verses 11-18.

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints...

As a little bit of background to Ephesians, the apostle Paul visited Ephesus for the purpose of exhortation and making sure they had good leadership but he was not the one that founded the church there. The church had its work cut out in Ephesus because of idolatry concerning Diana the goddess that was worshipped there. The book of Ephesians was a letter to the churches written by Paul.

The church in Ephesus, which was in an area now inside Turkey, needed help. Whether you look at the VT massacre as an isolated event or a flashpoint in U.S. history, many also need help with coping, moving on, and living a fruitful life.

Can we use these verses from Ephesians as a tool or weapon against evil today? I believe we can and the church I'm talking about now is not confined to Virginia Tech, or Virginia, or the U.S., but the church of the Lord, which is bigger than we can even begin to understand. All those that have given their hearts to Him are a part of that church.

And that church, I believe, needs to put on the full armor of God right now, today, tomorrow, and always.

It's a Tie!
This Week’s Top Scrooge

Yes, I talked about forgiveness, if only briefly, when Don Imus became nearly everybody's favorite dumb-headed jock. And yes, he looked like the odds-on favorite for This Week's Top Scrooge.

But I could not shake a story that came out earlier this week about a Nebraska woman who was charged with neglect of a dependent person after leaving her husband unattended in a car outside a casino.

No, I could not forget it. The Imus turnover did gain huge national attention, but this one "little" story is just too Nebraska-winter cold to slough off.

I'm calling it a tie - one on the national level and one on the local - between the retirement-headed Imus and a 52-year-old Nebraska woman, who I will not name for this dishonor...but the AP story out of Council Bluffs, Iowa went like this:

The woman was charged Saturday after she was found gambling at the Horseshoe Casino in Council Bluffs.

Police said she left her husband in the car and taped a sign to the window, which said “I have a disability. Do not be alarmed. I am resting. Please do not call security.”

Fairbanks’ husband cannot speak or care for himself, the police report said.

Officials estimate he had been left in the vehicle on the third floor of the parking garage for about an hour before he was discovered sleeping in the front passenger seat.

The temperature was about 28 degrees at the time, according to the National Weather Service.

An investigation revealed the same couple was involved in a similar incident on March 6.

Creepy stuff, huh?!

So, in distributing this tied dishonor...I still think their is room for forgiveness for both. Especially after being reminded by James Sterling in his opinion piece, Don Imus Needed Jesus: Receives Unforgiving Race Baiting Extortionist Spiel. It's the best thing I read all week...on that knuckle-headed jock.

This Week's Top Scrooge - April 6, 2007

I reckon because of its perverted creativity and the threat that this could probably happen to just about anyone, This Week's Top Scrooge pinning goes to the instigator of an online hoax in which a women's home became up for grabs.

The Scrooge is yet to be identified.

A fake ad on craigslist offered everything in Laurie Raye's house for free. By the time she realized what was going on, the house had been stripped of its light fixtures, hot water heater — even the kitchen sink.

Even the front door and a vinyl window were pilfered, Raye said in an AP story.
Although investigators are still looking for the cyber Scrooge or Scrooges, the dishoner has been given for the first week of April 2007.
